Tutoring
Hello Parents,
I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend! I wanted to send a quick notice regarding tutoring. Tutoring is every Wednesday from 2:30pm-3:15pm. Reading and math are offered. If you feel that your child is in need of tutoring, please feel free to have them attend! Tutoring is open, so if there is a certain concept that your child is not getting, they are able to attend for selected sessions. This alleviates some of the concerns about other time commitments. Thank you parents and please email me if you have further questions. Take care.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Alvarado

Ranger Ranch
Hello Parents,
This Wednesday our class will begin
participating in the Ranger Ranch program at school. It is a wonderful
way for students to become involved in growing delicious vegetables and
plants. Mrs. Fuori, the Ranger Ranch lead, is asking that all students
bring in an EMPTY VEGETABLE CAN by this WEDNESDAY. Please have the label
removed from the can and wash the can inside and out. Also, if your
child has an old shirt to be used as a painters shirt, please have them
bring it in as well. If you need any assistance with any of the above,
please let me know and I'd be happy to help. Thank you and take care.Friday, September 27, 2013

Hello Parents,
I hope everyone is doing well. We have completed our first week of school, and it has been exciting to get to know all of my students. This past week we have focused a lot on our classroom procedures. With this, I asked that students bring in their classroom supplies. This week we will begin our curriculum. On Monday I will spend time helping the students get their binders organized. In fifth grade we want the students to take on more independence with keeping track of their classwork and homework, in preparation for the demands of middle school. This Monday, if you can please have your child come with the following:
Large 3-ring Binder 5 pocket folders Notebook Paper 2 Spiral Notebooks 4 Composition Books
These supplies are part of the classroom list. If you are having any concerns, please let me know so I can see what I can do. Classroom Updates
Hello Parents,
We have successfully completed the second day of school! I am very proud of all of my students for coming to class with such great attitudes. We've had a lot of fun getting to know each other. I wanted to update you on a few important bits of information:
1. The classroom supply list is on this home page (scroll down to older posts). I understand that it may take a few days to get the materials together. I would really appreciate it if you are able to get the composition books, as they are used for their homework logs, as well as classroom warm ups. In addition, the homework logs should be initialed daily. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
2. Fifth grade is a very intensive year concerning new math concepts. The foundation for everything we are learning will rely heavily on whether or not your child is proficient in both their MULTIPLICATION and DIVISION facts. I cannot stress this point enough. My goal is to have all of my students show proficiency by the end of October. This can be done through a lot of practice. There are many resources available online, as well as free printable worksheets. You may also take a look on the home page under 'Math Facts' and find some tools to help you there. This will give your child a great start towards understanding the math concepts we will see throughout the year.
3. I have created an email mailing list using the information that was given to me on the student info sheet. If for any reason you would like me to send information to solely one email address, please let me know and I will make sure to update my contact list. I currently have both emails listed on the info sheet.
Thank you parents for a great start to the year. Have a good night.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Alvarado

Upcoming Novel
Hello Parents,
After testing we will begin our final novel for the year.
After testing we will begin our final novel for the year.
Shiloh
by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
When Marty Preston comes across a young beagle in the hills behind his
home, it's love at first sight -- and also big trouble. It turns out the
dog, which Marty names Shiloh, belongs to Judd Travers, a hot-tempered man who abuses his dogs. So when Shiloh runs away from
Judd to Marty, Marty just has to hide him and protect him from Judd.
But Marty's secret becomes too big for him to keep to himself, and it
exposes his entire family to Judd's anger. How far will Marty have to go
to make Shiloh his?
Shiloh is the winner of the Newbery Medal and is a classic in children's literature. I'm looking forward to diving into the book and know the students will enjoy it as well.
Have a great day.
